Among the Unawake poems from the Great Plains by Rodney Nelson

T w e l v e   A u g u s t

It did not have to cloud or rain
in air like both that no wind moved
only a suction
and I could
look into the grey-plum sky

at a sun of intenser plum
and know a day had begun to
come that would not have to arrive
entirely
would need to add
only its half or any part
to the grey unending stir of
wet and heat
to yellow maybe
