Floor (No.4)

by Victor Thompson

For three long hours!
Jesus hung nailed to the Cross.
Taken down at last
Mary held his broken body gently in her arms.

The Cross was taken to the sawmill
and cut into boards.

Later
my living room floor
badly worn in places
was repaired with a few of these boards
the aged pine matching nicely the original.

Even tho‚ the floor bears three coats of polyurethane
my hand almost trembles in awe
as I place my gin and tonic on the floor,
ripping a page from the Koran to use as a coaster
to protect this precious wood.
