Among the Unawake poems from the Great Plains by Rodney Nelson

E v e n   t h e   W o r d

It seemed I was pelado at that outfit
the top screw came to where I wrangatanged
and told me hasta la vista
big augur
did not have to
so I heard the owl hoot
another time am riding the coulees on
my own again oh
the critter within
he ain’t got no chin
I have but only one
regret to leave that sagehen of the heart
who freighted my crop with more than muckamuck
we mean to write
but how will she reach me
in care of sundown
will take a longer while
than I have to get serene
to let
you
into any other song even the word
